Sore throats are very common and usually nothing to worry about. They normally get better within a week. Most are caused by minor illnesses such as colds or flu and can be treated at home without antibiotics by managing symptoms.

Sore Throat/Strep A - Test Results
Sore Throat/Strep A
Our Sore Throat Service tests for a bacterial strep A infection of the throat by taking a swab sample. Results are usually available within 15 minutes. If a bacterial strep A infection is confirmed and it is considered appropriate, our pharmacist will give a course of antibiotics.
If the test is negative and it is considered appropriate, a course of antiseptic/anaesthetic throat lozenges will be given for symptomatic relief.

The test is suitable for adults and children from the age of one.
